The Matador

At 24.9m in length Matador is the largest International Offshore Racing Maxi ever built. Designed, developed and constructed at a cost of over US$20 million in 1991, Matador is constructed from carbon fibre, titanium and aluminium.

In her prime, Matador competed in 52 races, 8 regattas and 2 Maxi world championships and was undefeated proving she is truly an awesome sailing machine.

Now retired from racing, Matador conducts 2 day, 2 night sailing and diving holidays around the Whitsunday Islands. Combine the thrill of sailing the Whitsundays on this legendary Maxi, with exploring the beautiful underwater world of the Whitsunday Islands when you sail with us on Matador. With a dive instructor and SCUBA diving equipment on board, we’re happy to accommodate both certified divers as well as first time divers (certain medical conditions may preclude some guests from diving).

Close to the Great Barrier Reef, our diving holidays and scuba diving holidays reveal some of the world’s natural wonders. There are around 1500 species of fish, 350 different corals, 400 species of molluscs and 10,000 species of sponges. As an ecotourism operator, we take pride in the fact that we can combine both the thrill of Maxi sailing and SCUBA diving with an ecofriendly operation.

Guests participating in a Whitsunday sailing holiday or a scuba diving holiday on Matador also have the very special opportunity to camp on the shores of the Hook Island Wilderness Resort (hookislandresort.com). OzSail is one of very few operators in the Whitsunday Island offering this option. Guests are free to utilize the resort facilities including bathrooms, swimming pool and bar while on the island. Perfect for couples who want the privacy of a private double tent or guests who are worried about getting seasick, our camp ashore option is available during the months of April – November. Matador can take up to 10 camp-ashore passengers.
